The Kibingo washing station serves 3,515 farmers located in the hills of northern Burundi. These farmers have access to initiatives of the washing station such as access to organic fertilizer and low-cost coffee seedlings. Each smallholder farmer produces anywhere from 200-300 kilos of cherry annually from approximately 250 trees per farmer. All of the cherries are floated before being hand sorted to eliminate any evidence of damaged, under, or overripe cherries. These are then spread out to form a single layer of cherry across drying tables for 3-4 weeks. Quality checks continue throughout drying to only allow the highest quality cherry to complete the drying process.
